What does the course involve:

Topic 1: Working as a Physicist, Topic 2: Mechanics, Topic 3: Electricity, Topic 4: Materials, Topic 5: Waves and the Behaviour of Light, Topic 6: Further Mechanics, Topic 7: Electric and Magnetic Fields, Topic 8: Nuclear and Particle Physics, Topic 9: Thermodynamics, Topic 10: Nuclear Radiation, Topic 11: Gravitational Fields, Topic 12: Space, Topic 13: Oscillations.

Assessment

Papers 1 and 2 are 1 hour 45 minutes. The papers carry 90 marks and may include multiple-choice, short open-questions open response, calculations and extended writing questions. Students will be expected to apply their knowledge and understanding to familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

 

Paper 3 is 2 hours 30 minutes. The paper carries 120 marks. Some questions will assess conceptual and theoretical understanding of experimental methods. There is also a practical endorsement in which students’ practical ability will be judged internally.

 

Overall, a minimum of 40% of the marks across the three papers will be awarded for Mathematics at Level 2 or above.

Physics leads on to a wide range of courses and careers. A degree course such as Physics, the Sciences, Medicine, Meteorology, Engineering (including Chemical Engineering and related programmes offer employment in the areas of, for example, radiography or biotechnology.
