Course Options

Ballakermeen High School

2025

Kindness    Honesty    Respect

Once again, our options process will be run through Google Classroom. With the wealth of resources available for our students via this website, this online ‘portal’ has encouraged the Year 11s to make much more informed decisions, which is beneficial in the long term.

Whether a student decides to follow up their post 16 studies with an apprenticeship, a place at the Island’s UCM or a fixed-term course at a UK university, they will find that competition for places has increased, alongside an inflation in ‘course offers’ at many institutions. As a result, we expect that our students are focussed from Day 1 and maintain an attendance figure above 95%.

A level is not the only option for our students, and we believe that every pathway holds equal importance. We have spoken to Year 11 in depth about the superb range of courses available at other educational providers on the Island and we would encourage them to explore their options before committing to anything. A Level is academically rigorous and, if students are not totally invested in their chosen subjects, I would advise against staying at school, especially if they are making this decision based on the predominant direction of their friendship groups.

Our Sixth Form team consists of 6 members of staff, who all control an area of Sixth Form, helping students with career decisions, performance analysis, pastoral care, post 18 study and work options, curriculum guidance and academic mentoring. As a school, we have a very strong reputation for high performance at A level but we also prioritise the well-being of our students above all else. Whilst balancing the needs of over 230 students, we work hard to find time to help everyone who reaches out to us.

We have a very large post 16 provision and we are proud of the academic range that we offer our students. We know how difficult it will be for students to narrow their choices down to just 3 subjects but we are here to help and advise them. I would invite parents and carers to be fully involved in this process, either through their child’s Google Classroom or by paying us a visit in the Sixth Form centre.

I look forward to meeting you all soon and embarking on a really successful period of time for your child.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to the Ballakermeen Sixth Form!

Mr Richard Karran

Director of Sixth Form
