ENGLISH LITERATURE

What does the course involve:
Students on this course are expected to take an active role in all aspects of their own learning, from leading class discussions to devising their own essay titles. A Level English Literature is a respected academic subject and is therefore held in high regard by employers and universities as evidence of a student’s ability to think critically and analytically.

Component 1: Drama (9ET0/01)
30%
This is an exam lasting 2 hours and 15 minutes. You will answer one question from a choice of two on the Shakespeare play studied. In Section B you will answer one question from a choice of two on A Streetcar Named Desire. A total of 60 marks are available – 35 marks for Section A and 25 marks for Section B. It is an open book exam – clean copies of both plays can be taken into the examination.
Component 2: Prose (9ET0/02)

This is a one hour paper in which you will answer one comparative essay question from a choice of two on your studied novels (A Thousand Splendid Suns and Wuthering Heights). It is an open book exam – clean copies of the novels can be taken into the examination.
Component 3: Poetry (9ET0/03)
30%
Component 3: Poetry (9ET0/03)This is an exam lasting 2 hours and 15 minutes. You will answer one question from a choice of two comparing an unseen modern poem written post 2000 with a named poem from Poems of the Decade: An Anthology of the Forward Books of Poetry 2002-2011 in Section A. In Section B you will answer one essay question on the Romantic poet: John Keats. A total of 60 marks are available – 30 marks for Section A and 30 marks for Section B. It is an open book exam – clean copies of both poetry anthologies can be taken into the examination.
Component 4: Coursework (9ET0/04)
20%
This is the coursework. It is worth 20% of your final A Level grade. Students write one comparative extended essay of 2500-3000 words referring to two texts which must be different from those studied in components 1, 2 and 3. They must be complete texts and can be linked by theme, movement, author or period. A total of 60 marks are available.
