EXAM BOARD: BTEC

What does the course involve:

The BTEC qualification is designed for students who are interested in an introduction to the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information, alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT. Previous IT qualification is not necessary to study this course. The qualification is graded from a PASS to DISTINCTION*. In Year 12, students will complete the required units for the Certificate in Information Technology, which is equivalent to 0.5 of an A Level grade. This can be cashed in at the end of Year 12, if students decide not to continue with their studies. In Year 13, students will complete additional units for the Extended Certificate in IT, which is the equivalent of an A Level grade.

Year 12

Using Social Media in Business:

Students explore how businesses use social media to promote their products and services. Students also implement social media activities in a business to meet requirements. Internally assessed coursework unit.

Creating systems to manage information:

Students study the design, creation, testing and evaluation of a relational database system to manage information. Externally assessed practical task. Task is set by the exam board and completed using a computer. Task is submitted electronically.

Year 13

Data modelling OR website development: (choice made by school)

Students will design and create an IT system to solve a problem/meet a given business need. Internally assessed coursework unit.

Information Technology systems:

Includes content such as hardware and software, online IT systems, networks and threats to data, information and systems. Externally assessed paper based examination.
