EXAM BOARD: EDUQAS

What does the course involve:

This is a linear A Level course, meaning that there is not a separate AS Level qualification. It is based on a detailed theoretical framework for analysing and creating media, providing students with the tools to develop a critical understanding and appreciation of the media over a two year period. Over the two year course, students complete three components.

The UK creative industries are growing year on year, providing 1 out of every 11 jobs and creating more new jobs than any other industry (The Creative Industries, 2017). A Level Media Studies is an advantageous gateway to these jobs, providing students with their first steps towards exciting careers in advertising, games development and many more.

 

To excel in Media Studies you need to be an interested and independent learner with excellent organisation skills. This is an intense subject balancing creative and technical skills development with the study of media texts, industries and audiences.

Component 1: Media Products, Industries and Audiences

35%

This exam consists of two sections:

  • Analysing Media Language and Representation in relation to newspapers, music videos, advertising and marketing.

  • Understanding Media Industries and Audiences in relation to newspapers, advertising and marketing, film, radio and video games.

Component 2: Media Forms and Products in Depth

35%

This exam assesses media language, representation, media industries, audiences and media contexts. It consists of three sections:

  • Television in the Global Age

  • Magazines: Mainstream and Alternative Media

  • Media in the Online Age (blogs and websites)

Component 3: Cross Media Production

30%

This coursework is an individual cross-media production based on two forms in response to a choice of briefs (set by the exam board). The precise requirements of the set briefs will differ each year and learners will be required to create a production for a specific intended audience and industry context.
