What is it good for:

As well as being a fascinating subject in itself that will help you unlock the mysteries of science, technology and statistics, studying mathematics offers higher earning potential, exciting career opportunities and a grounding in important life skills. It’s known as a ‘facilitating subject’ by universities, meaning that it paves the way for a plethora of degree courses. Whatever your career ideas, earning potential is always worth considering. Did you know that passing a STEM subject at A Level (science, technology, engineering or maths) can give you a salary advantage of 15% over those who don’t? So your job prospects are boosted already, whether or not you decide to do a degree.

Pure Mathematics:

Problem solving & proof, surds & indices, algebra & functions, coordinate geometry, equations & inequalities, exponentials & logarithms, differentiation & integration, quadratic functions, trigonometry, polynomials, graphs & transformations, binomial expansion, vectors.

Year 2 only: sequences & series, parametric equations, inverse trigonometric functions, numerical methods.

AS Level Year 12 - Unit 2: Applied

A Level Year 13 - Unit 4: Applied

Statistics:

Statistical sampling, data processing, presentation & interpretation, correlation & regression, probability, the binomial distribution, statistical distributions, statistical hypothesis testing.

Year 2 only: the normal distribution,

Mechanics:

Quantities & units in mechanics, kinematics, forces & Newton’s Laws of Motion, variable acceleration.

Year 2 only: moments, projectiles, friction.
