Year 12

As a CAIE (Cambridge) subject, marks for History units examined in Year 12 are carried forward to Year 13.  This means, students sit their A Level over two years rather than all at the end of Year 13.  Year 12 (AS) History consists of two examined units based on International history, 1870–1939. There are two exam papers for the AS Level, one is source-based and the other is essay-based. Each year, different topics are assessed on the source and essay-based papers. For example, for examination in 2027, the source-based paper focusses on Imperialism and the emergence of world powers, c.1870–1918, whereas, the essay-based paper will assess International relations, 1919–29: conflict and cooperation and International history, 1929–39: the rise of extremism and the road to war. This will give students both an excellent understanding of this period of international history, and a grounding in many of the issues that have influenced global history since 1870. Students have an option to resit their AS in November of Year 13 should they feel it necessary.

Year 13

Year 13 topics complete the full A Level requirement. Students study two further examined units, both of which are relevant to the world we live in today. Unit 3, a source-based paper, deals with the Origins and Development of the Cold War, 1941 – 1950. Unit 4 is essay based and focuses on the Soviet Empire in Eastern Europe, 1953–91and  the end of minority rule in South Africa and Zimbabwe, 1948–94.
