BHS Sixth Form Options 2026
EXTRA-CURRICULAR LIFE
Junior Achievement
All students have the chance to create their own company group and take on competitors throughout Europe. This programme, run by our partners at J.A., has been incredibly popular in recent years.
Oxbridge Mentoring
For students who are wanting to broaden their thoughts on contemporary world issues, we run a Critical Thinking Group. Students are split into seminar pods of 5 or 6 and learn how to construct balanced viewpoints and debate them in a robust manner. This group also forms the initial phase of our preparation for Oxford and Cambridge applicants but is open to every member of the Sixth Form, no matter where they intent to study after Ballakermeen.
Law Group
Law group meets each week for 30 minutes. During each session, we take either a piece of legislation, or a famous case, and we look into why the verdict was reached. If we don't agree with the verdict, we often retrial the case. Once a term, we have outside speakers who come to give insight into the profession and any exciting opportunities that exist for our students.
Voltaire Society
This is our Sixth Form led debating club. The Voltaire Society has hosted some of the Island’s most well-known figures and has not shied away from controversial subject matter, enabling our student body to have their say on issues of the day.
Charity Challenge
Co-ordinated through the One World Centre, Charity Challenge enables our students to get together and think of innovative ways to raise money for charitable organisations throughout the world.
Medical Group
The Sixth Form team run a two year ‘medical preparation programme’ for potential Medical, Bio Medical, Bio Chemistry, Physiotherapy and Radiology applicants. This group meets once a week, during Private Study, to discuss the signs and symptoms of common illnesses, the inner workings of the NHS and to fully prepare for university interviews and MMI stages. Our Sixth Form careers adviser also works hard to make sure all Medical, Dental, Optometry and Veterinary students have relevant work experience during their time with us.
Teaching Group
This group meets every Wednesday in Tutor Time and is focussed on helping our students who have an interest in become teachers or lecturers. It is a mix of theory-based sessions (pedagogy and learning styles) with some practical opportunities at in-class work experience. Students get the chance to visit primary schools and watch experienced Secondary teachers.
Mandarin
Students have the option to take part in a Mandarin lesson each week in the Confucius Classroom. These classes are taught by a native speaker and lead to a qualification.
Duke of Edinburgh
All students are welcome to join the school’s Duke of Edinburgh scheme. Students joining from other schools may carry on at whichever level they left off.

Vet Group
This group meets once a week for 30 minutes. We concentrate on researching various animal illness, the positives and negatives of the current progression and the skills required for interview. One of the main objectives of this group is to take-part in seminar activities that review the 'bigger picture' of veterinary science, including the One Health Approach of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).
Dentistry Group
This group meets during Tutor Time on a Wednesday. It is a new group that only started in 2026 and it looks at the various types of conditions that a Denist experiences on a daily basis. We look at diagnosis, treatment and aftercare. As time goes on, we are hoping to be visited by local practitioners. Just like Medical Group, this group begins to look at interview technique in the early part of year 13.
